Strain development Developed by Dr. Shinkai at Kyoto University. A neo cassette was transferred into TT2 ES cells to replace exons 5-8 in the Mak gene. The mutant mice were backcrossed to C57BL/6NJcl for 9 times.  
Strain description B6.Cg-Mak<tm1Yshk>. Mak, male germ cell-associated kinase gene expresses specifically in testicular germ cells. Mak deficient mice show no gross abnormalities, and most of the mice were fertile. However, the litter size derived homozygous mutant males and their sperm motility in vitro were mildly reduced compared to those of normal mice. This strain is useful for elucidation of the function of Mak gene in spermatogenesis.  
Colony maintenance Sibling mating.
Homozygous male are fertile, but exhibit slight reduction in litter size and sperm motility in vitro.
