Strain development Developed by Kazuhiro Iwai, Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka City University in 2002.Transgene was injected into the pronuclei of B6D2F1 fertilized eggs. Backcrossed to C57BL/6J.  
Strain description This transgenic mice express a human IRP2 gene under the control of the rat neuron specific enolase promoter. IRP2 gene is a iron regulatory factor. Tg mice exhibit increased intercellular iron in neuron specific cells, and a nerve degeneration and behavior disorders with aging.  
Colony maintenance Carrier X Noncarrier [C57BL/6J (Crlj)]Tg mice show a low activity after around 15 months of age, and a low motor coordination after around 21 months of age.
